Photography / Robert Medina Cook

As a native New Mexican, I have been blessed with the opportunity and freedom to explore an incredible land—, a land filled with mystery, ancestral spirits, and abundant light, texture, and color. It is here in New Mexico, land of my ancestors, that I derive inspiration for my work.

More a "seeker of images" rather than "photographer," I find myself wandering this "land of clear light"— not to document a subject, but with the intention of celebrating its existence. Many times as I stand with camera in hand before an ancient ruin, aging adobe church, or crumbling stone dwelling, there is a powerful intention to honor its presence— and its passing— as it slowly dissolves and returns back to the source from which it came. Other times, as I quietly watch horses or buffalo move through their world, I am overwhelmed by their powerful, spiritual presence and feel moved to pass on the experience through the lens of my camera. These experiences have enabled me to understand how Spirit embodies all things—and to be mindful of even the smallest of creations.

It is my hope to offer a glimpse beyond the physical presence of the subject and open a door to a deeper level where the "essence of Spirit" speaks to each of us quietly— in its own unique way.
